Makayla Himes, SheLor alumnae, chose SheLor School of Dance for her capstone project to focus on inclusive dance education. She developed a syllabus for adaptive dance at our studio which contributes to Miss Lori's statement "dance can be a wonderful source of all children's development, accomplishment, and enjoyment".
Makayla was an advanced competition dancer at SheLor for 15 years. She first started at 3 years old and danced till she graduated in 2016. She continued her passion for dance at Grove City College where she also studied Elementary Education. She went on to complete her education in Chatham University's Entry-Level Doctor of Occupational Therapy Program.
"We meet the students where they are. They can come to class and think, 'I can be a ballerina', whatever that looks for them. Dance helps with gross motor skills, coordination, balance, fine-motor skills and dexterity. I saw some of them really find a passion for dance."
SheLor School of Dance is offering an adapted dance class series with Miss Makayla Himes! This adapted dance class is designed for children with an additional needs (i.e., Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, sensory-processing disorder, cerebral palsy or other physical, cognitive, or emotional limitation) that limits them from participating in a traditional dance class. The dance class is designed for children ages 6-12. The class will be a beginner ballet/creative movement style class. Dancers will learn basic ballet terminology and movements. Dancers will be encouraged to explore dancing to different types of music and use their creativity to express themselves through dance. We will practice rhythms, patterns, and other foundational dance skills. All dancers will be paired with an older dancer who will serve as their “dance buddy” throughout the entirety of the dance class. Our “dance buddies” are competitive dancers at SheLor who graciously volunteer their time to assist with this program. Dance buddies will assist in demonstrating movements, encouraging dancers to participate, and of course they will dance with them too!
