The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) is an educational and training organization for teachers and students. Founded in 1920, it is one of the worlds most renowned and influential dance institutions that promote excellence in classical ballet education and training of dancers. The RAD has promoted the improvement of dance training standards. What originated in the UK has now influenced ballet education internationally with its vigorous training programs. The Academy's patron is Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Today, the RAD has a presence in 79 countries The RAD has promoted the improvement of dance training standards worldwide.

The RAD examination syllabus, taught to more than a quarter of a million students worldwide, helps and encourages teachers to perfect their teaching skills and pass on this knowledge to their students. The RAD, through its syllabus, seeks the accomplishment of dance by educating and training students and teachers and providing examinations to set standards and reward achievement.

SheLor School of Dance has adopted the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) as their standard in classical ballet training of their teachers and students.


Lori Portman-Lewis has been a Registered Teacher with the RAD since 1986. The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) has been the foundation in student dance education at SheLor and 100’s of students have been adjudicated with the RAD in various levels. Students have achieved high honors in their RAD exams. SheLor takes pride in the strict ballet standard adherence of the RAD and believes ballet is the foundation of a well-trained dancer.
